Life has a way of teaching us lessons. The faster we learn the lesson, the sooner we can move on. This is not the message I intended to write today. I created this for my Powerhouse newsletter but it has resonated with several people and I thought it would resonate with you.
While on vacation, I created a simple and quick strength training routine that you can use while travelling or when you have limited time to work out. We (my husband and I) discussed descriptions, benefits and took pictures of each exercise. For some reason, the pictures would not upload to my email programme.
The template kept freezing. Nothing was going according to plan. How could this be? Feelings of frustration and overwhelm began pouring in. My readers were expecting my email. I felt like I was letting them down. I could hear myself sighing. My shoulders were tightening up. I wanted this to work, badly. My plan was not working. Feeling defeated, I closed my computer and decided to work on it the next morning.
After taking a few deep breaths, I thought to myself, this must be another life lesson. I asked myself, “How can I make this work rather than focusing on how it isn’t working?”
As soon as my head hit the pillow, I knew what had to be done. Here’s what I learned.
Four ways to reset your mindset when you feel overwhelmed
• Stop what you are doing and walk away. When you are overwhelmed, it is more difficult to make progress. When you step away from the situation you can reflect and reset your mindset.
• Ask yourself, “How can I look at this from a different perspective?” When you feel overwhelmed, you can very easily go into ‘tunnel vision’ mode. You only see one way out when there are always several doors of opportunity. Look for other doors of opportunity.
• Be mindful. Accept the situation as it is. When feeling overwhelmed, you may tend to go into I should have, I wish I would have, or blame others mode. No matter how much you focus on what you should have done, you cannot go back in time to change what is. This is a waste of your time and your energy. Focus instead on your next step.
• Take deep breaths. When you are stressed out, your body goes into fight or flight mode. Your blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate rise. Being in this state all the time leads to chronic stress. Chronic stress leads to chronic inflammation which leads to chronic disease. Deep breathing will reset your parasympathetic system and calm your body and mind.
It’s much easier to go with the flow than against the tide.
When things do not go according to plan, there is always another door of opportunity waiting for you. Look for the doors of opportunity.
