Earlier this month I asked my Facebook and Instagram followers whether reality was really what happens around them or what happens within. I was both shocked and pleased when 100% of those who voted said within. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised because these kinds of mindset shifts happen when the world experiences such life altering events as seen in 2020. People start remembering what really matters.
The question came to me while I was falling asleep one night. It resonated so incredibly hard within me that I just had to wake up and jot it down. The answer was so obvious and clear to me in that moment. But when I woke up the next morning and read my notes, I wondered what I was getting at.
Later that day, I found myself feeling overwhelmed, frustrated and losing hope. I had so much I needed to do for my business. I just had to get it done, because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to reach my goals…and it’s likely why I haven’t been successful at the level I desire yet (well…that’s what I was telling myself).
But the baby needed me, my babysitter had to leave early, I had laundry that needed to be done, dishes, a dirty house, much needed self-care and I hadn’t earned a penny towards bills for next month yet. In my mind I had to do all the things TODAY! No one else was going to get all that done and make my dreams happen too. It was all on me and I was failing.
Needless to say, all the negative talk ensued in my head…
“What made you think you could do this?”
“You’re never going to achieve what you want. You just don’t have the time, the energy…”
“…you’re actually lazy; that’s your problem…”
“…you don’t have what it takes…”
“…everything always starts off well but sooner or later it flops…”
“…good things don’t happen to you, so you’ll never succeed in achieving your dreams…”
“You should just give up!”
I mean these thoughts were literally screaming at me. And I wasn’t only listening, I was believing because I could feel my energy shift. My mood darkened and I started to feel very emotional. In the moment, feeling all that I was feeling, entertaining every word… I was failing and nothing was working. That was my reality, and then it was as if I could see the words and I finally heard them.
At that moment, I caught myself and intentionally decided to change the channel in my head. I realised as much as there may be evidence to prove each and every statement it was not true, it did not have to be my reality.
1. Because I didn’t want it to be true.
2. I needed it to not be true and
3. There was plenty evidence to the contrary as well.
I knew I didn’t have to accept that. So I rewrote the narrative to be what I wanted to be true and agreed with that new narrative out loud. I repeated the ones that really felt good and gave me strength and I restored my drive, my focus and my hope.
You see, it is so easy to give in to the thoughts that encourage you to give up because often they really make you feel as though that is your truth. And when external circumstances appear to validate them, it’s even easier to give in to them.
But in that moment of regaining my strength I reframed those circumstances to line up with what I believed and what I wanted. My circumstances didn’t change but my reality did. That mindset shift allowed me to clean the lens of my mind so that I could see what would feed me soul nourishing truth to put me in a position to realise everything I set out to achieve.
I remembered that my steps are ordered. That everything I experience is exactly what I needed to bring out the talent, the skill, the magic…the POWER that I have within me to CREATE what I see and get the wealth that was PROMISED. But it was up to me to align myself to that promise.
Of course, I didn’t achieve it all that day, and I’m still working on bringing everything I’ve envisioned to fruition but every time I exercise that muscle it gets stronger and stronger and I get closer to seeing it and living it in the physical world.
Each and every time I have a set back, a struggle, an off day, or whatever may be trying to hold me back it is up to me to realign myself, remember what I already know to be true and keep putting one foot in front of the other with that truth in my mind, on my tongue, and in my heart.
What happens around us is really just a reflection of our inner state. You know how they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Well, your beliefs and values frame your perspective, how you think, how you feel and how you approach things. It is from within that your reality creates. Yes, your reality creates, I didn’t get that backwards.
So I want to ask you, what is your reality creating? If it’s not taking you towards the goals, dreams and aspirations you have for yourself it’s time to look within and venture the journey of discovering what is holding you back. It’s time to bring everything into alignment starting with you.
